Business Link South Yorkshire
By Managing Director, Julie Readman
As an organisation that has worked closely with the Sheffield Chamber in its more recent history, we at Business Link South Yorkshire are delighted to be supporting the Chamber’s 150th anniversary celebrations throughout 2007.
Back in the 1850s, Sheffield’s major industries were steel and cutlery. Entrepreneurs were largely restricted to those areas – the biggest innovation of the period was the Bessemer converter - and ideas about supporting businesses to encourage the growth of the local economy were very much in their infancy. The establishment of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry helped to change this, and started a long journey which has got business support to where it is today.
Of course, Sheffield in the 21st century still has industry at its core, but the emphasis is very much on advanced manufacturing. There are other sectors which are an important part of the city’s economy; food and tourism, the bioscience and environmental industries and the rapidly emerging creative and digital industries. To support these and other sectors, there is now a fully comprehensive network of business support for anyone who is wanting to start or grow a business. Business Link South Yorkshire is at the heart of this business support, with its aim to make this area the best place in the UK to start and grow a business.
Business Link South Yorkshire would like to wish the very best to the Sheffield Chamber and its celebrations over the coming year.
