Sheffield is landing its very own official Monopoly board, it has been announced.
The city has seen off regional rivals Leeds, York and Lincoln in a fierce and tight four-way X Factor-style contest to become the first Yorkshire or Lincolnshire city to get its own game. It means London streets like Mayfair and Park Lane will be replaced by city landmarks like City Hall, Bramall Lane and, of course, Meadowhall, which could be for sale for as little as £200. In all, 33 Sheffield favourites will appear on the customised board.A top-hatted real-life Monopoly maker from the capital, Coun Jan Wilson, leader of Sheffield City Council, and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Nigel Tomlinson together announced the news at The Winter Garden, in Surrey Street, Sheffield. The Winter Garden is the largest temperate glass house in a European city. Bosses at Monopoly – the trading game of hotels and houses – chose it as the venue for the announcement because it’s a house with a difference. It is a front-runner to grab the top “Mayfair” slot on the new board, along with Meadowhall and the City Hall.
CounWilson said: “Having a Sheffield version of Monopoly is yet another thing that’s putting this city firmly on the map. I love playing Monopoly and I can’t wait to start playing the Sheffield edition.”
Nigel Tomlinson said: “We are celebrating our 150th anniversary and are excited to be involved in a project which will bring so much fun for anyone who lives in the city or has links with Sheffield.”
Also likely to appear on the newboard are the Hallam fm Arena, the town hall, the city’s football clubs and the Crucible.
Monopoly bosses have been canvassing the public in Sheffield on which landmarks should appear on the board. The Sheffield public can decide via email at sheffield@winningmoves.co.uk London-based Winning Moves UK is producing this special and official Monopoly game under licence from the Hasbro Properties Group, the company that owns Monopoly. Bosses are also thinking about making a couple of special Monopoly pieces with a Sheffield theme – such as a fork to reflect the steel city.
The Monopoly Sheffield edition creator, Mark Marriott, said: “It’s vital the new board reflects the hearts and minds of Sheffield and the length and breadth of the city. That’s why we are polling the people who know best – the great Sheffield public. “We are looking mainly for landmarks but we are open minded about how the board looks,” added Mark. “The underlining factor is that it reflects the essence and spirit of Sheffield.”
The Sheffield Chamber of Commerce took a lead role in the securing Sheffield as the winning choice for the special city edition of the world famous board game. We will also take a lead role in the final make-up of the board as well as making the launch of the board game a reality towards the end of the year in October, as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations.
