CLUB HOLD ARSENAL – FOR 20 MINUTES!
Sheffield FC ladies can proudly claim to have held the European Cup and Premier League champions goalless – for 20 minutes at least!
Club took on Arsenal ladies in an exhibition game at the Bright Finance stadium as part of Sheffield FC’s 150th anniversary celebrations. More than 500 people attended the game in Dronfield, which Arsenal eventually ran out 12-0 winners.
Arsenal had brought along their first-team with nine of the squad having been chosen on the morning of the game to play for England at the World Cup next month in China.
Nigel Hughes, Sheffield FC ladies coach, said: “It was a fantastic occasion and a great advertisement for ladies football.
“Arsenal conducted themselves very professionally and were determined to play the game as best they could. They certainly took it seriously with the amount of internationals in their side and we did very well to keep the score goalless for more than 20 minutes.
“The Arsenal manager spoke with us after the game and praised our players’ performance, particularly our goalkeeper Caz Whiteman who was outstanding.”
Arsenal ladies are currently the best women’s team in Europe after enjoying a 100 per cent record in every game they played last season, collecting four trophies along the way.
